This week CharÂlie Gilkes, co-founder of IncepÂtion Group, that owns 11 conÂcepÂtuÂal venues the best-known of which include Mr FogÂg’s, Cahoots, BunÂga BunÂga, Maggie’s and Bart’s, talks about his jourÂney manÂagÂing a comÂpaÂny litÂerÂalÂly stopped in its tracks by the pandemic.

I think like most peoÂple, we were in comÂplete shock
iniÂtialÂly. NevÂer in our worst nightÂmares did we envisÂage a time we’d have had
to shut all of our venues for almost a year and overnight our revÂenue would go
to zero. It all hapÂpened so quickÂly, and it felt like a very surÂreÂal nightmare
at first.
We had to make lots of incredÂiÂbly difÂfiÂcult deciÂsions to cut
costs quickÂly, by far the worst of which was havÂing to say goodÂbye to some
longÂstandÂing colÂleagues through no fault of their own. We were grateful
for the furÂlough scheme which enabled us to proÂtect as many jobs as possible
and we engage with landÂlords and credÂiÂtors, many of whom have been very
supÂportÂive to help us navÂiÂgate this incredÂiÂbly difÂfiÂcult past year.

We have tried to adapt as much as possible.
When we first reopened after the iniÂtial lockÂdown, we
embraced PPE and social disÂtancÂing in a unique way using VicÂtoÂriÂan mannequins
at Mr FogÂg’s and beeÂkeepÂer suits at the House of BotanÂiÂcals. Our customers
enjoyed the fact that whilst takÂing Covid safeÂty seriÂousÂly with enhanced
cleanÂing, enforced social disÂtancÂing and track and trace poliÂcies, we also lent
into things with some quirkiÂer details in ways that fitÂted well with our brand
narÂraÂtive. Whilst closed, we’ve also brought as much as our content
online as posÂsiÂble from virÂtuÂal explorÂer talks to cockÂtail masterclasses.

LatÂer last year, we decidÂed to start sendÂing our best
Cahoots and Mr FogÂg’s cockÂtails in pouchÂes that fit through letÂterÂboxÂes in the
post. We’ve also develÂoped realÂly fun interÂacÂtive cockÂtail kits with all the
ingreÂdiÂents. The drinks come with QR codes to scan which show fun, immersive
instrucÂtion videos. These have been realÂly well received and we hope that
these items will conÂtinÂue well past Lockdown.
I have learnt so much throughÂout this criÂsis. The most
imporÂtant lesÂson is the difÂferÂence between profÂit and cashÂflow! It has been a
big realÂiÂsaÂtion that despite planÂning as well as you can, things can unfortunately
hapÂpen that are out of your conÂtrol. It’s also, I think brought the hospitality
indusÂtry closÂer and we have all tried to help one anothÂer, sharÂing information
and ideas and I think it has shown what a powÂerÂful force and voice we can be united
in the future.
The busiÂness is curÂrentÂly in hiberÂnaÂtion waitÂing for 12th April when some outÂdoor spaces will reopen, and on 17th May they expect things to fulÂly start getÂting back to normal.
